Anti-cardiolipin antibodies also occur transiently in a variety of infectious diseases. In these cases, patients positive for anti-cardiolipin antibodies should be retested following an appropriate interval. Confirmed active or seropositive syphilis patients can have elevated cardiolipin antibody levels.
The anti-cardiolipin test can produce false positive results due to cross-reactivity with dsDNA antibody. |
| Schedule: |
Set up: Mon-Fri; Results in 1-3 days |
| Method: |
Multiplex bead immunoassay |
| Clinical Significance: |
Cardiolipin antibodies (CA) are seen in a subgroup of patients with autoimmune disorders, particularly Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), who are at risk for vascular thrombosis, thrombocytopenia, cerebral infarct and/or recurrent spontaneous abortion. Elevations of CA associated with increased risk have also been seen in idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura, rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis, and primary Sjogren's syndrome. |
