Preferred Specimen: Whole Blood
Container: Nine parts of freshly drawn venous blood are collected into one part trisodium citrate (3.2% sodium citrate). 

No other anticoagulant is acceptable. 

Store unfilled tubes at room temperature.

Collection Instructions: Invert tube 5 to 10 times immediately after filling and transport at room temperature. If testing will be delayed longer than 4 hours from time of collection, transport frozen, platelet-poor plasma.

Limitations: If hematocrit is >55%, redraw specimen with adjusted volume of NaCitrate. Call for details.
Additional Information:

Blood should be collected in a blue-top tube containing 3.2% buffered sodium citrate. Evacuated collection tubes must be filled to completion (see fill line on tube) to ensure a proper blood-to-anticoagulant ratio. Submit difficult draws in pediatric tube (0.5 mL frozen platelet-poor plasma). The sample should be mixed immediately by gentle inversion to ensure adequate mixing of the anticoagulant with the blood.

Method: Chromogenic assay performed on the ACL TOP 750 analyzer.
Clinical Significance:

Heparin is the most frequently used antithrombotic drug. The biological activity of this sulphated glycosaminoglycan resides in its ability to accelerate (up to 2000-fold) the inhibitory effect of antithrombin on coagulation proteases. In recent years, it has been shown that LMWH, besides being as useful therapeutically as UFH, also has a longer half-life.
Reference Ranges:

Therapeutic range for LMWH - Lovenox is 0.5-1.0 U/mL

Prophylactic range for LMWH - Lovenox is 0.1-0.3 U/mL
