Minimum Volume:

0.5 mL plasma 

This volume does not allow for repeat testing.

Collection Instructions:

Outpatient sites including RMG

Please spin down (centrifuge) the lavender tube and separate the plasma from the red cells into a separate tube.  Do not send the primary tube

*If testing will be delayed past the 24 hour timeframe, freeze the plasma and send frozen*

Transport Temperature:

Refrigerated and plasma separated

Stability:

Room temperature: 7 hours (unspun whole blood only)
Refrigerated: 24 hours - plasma must be separated.

Frozen: 5 days

*May be added on to a CBC if within 7 hours of collection

Rejection Criteria:

Hemolysis

Whole blood tubes left unseparated >7 hours after collection.  Please follow collection instructions

Clinical Significance:

BNP assay is used in the evaluation of acute congestive heart failure.  It is FDA cleared for aid in diagnosis of heart failure and risk stratification of heart failure and acute coronary syndrome.  Elevations can occur due to right heart failure,cor pulmonale, pulmonary hypertension, sepsis, renal failure and acute pulmonary embolism.

BNP results 100 pg/mL or greater are considered abnormal and suggestive of patients with CHF
